Growing greens as hobby
By Marsha Tan

JOHOR BARU: The state agriculture department has a five-year plan to cultivate vegetables and fish as a hobby in residential estates and rural areas.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said 27 housing areas in the state’s eight districts were involved at present with the Bumi Hijau project.

The number would increase 10 times at the end of the fifth year.

“Those interested are given a starter kit, which include fertiliser and seeds, and also guidelines on how to plant the vegetables.

“In Johor Baru, six residential areas are involved namely Taman Seri Skudai, Taman Indahpura,Taman Saleng, Taman Air Biru, Taman Scientex and Taman Bandar Baru Uda,” Abdul Ghani told reporters after launching the statelevel campaign here on Tuesday.

He hoped the hobbyists could nurture their ventures into commercial enterprises.

“You do not need a large space. To grow vegetables, plant them in front of your house. Catfish for example can be reared using canvas cloth, and it is possible to breed 500 at one time..
