Consumer packaging, particularly flexible plastic packaging in the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, has become one of the most dynamic product clusters with increasing consumer awareness on the quality and integrity of the products. Accordingly, Scientex has made strategic moves to tap into the huge global potential and opportunities that this market segment offers for Scientex.
In early 2013, we completed our acquisition of the Great Wall Companies (GW) – an established brand with considerable presence in both the domestic and international markets for consumer packaging products. By bringing GW into our stable, Scientex has captured a mature and sizeable market in Europe, Latin America and Asia Pacific for flexible plastic packaging.
A year later in February 2014 we acquired Seacera Polyfilms, an established manufacturer of Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) films that has developed a significant presence in the domestic market since incorporation in 1990. This acquisition has enabled Scientex to expand its product range and services to the flexible film lamination industries.
In 2015, Scientex acquired packaging player Mondi Ipoh Sdn Bhd to further expand its consumer packaging products portfolio which further gave Scientex an opportunity to expand into hygiene products packaging and heavy duty sacks serving large multinational companies.
In 2016, the strategic alliance with Futamura Chemical Co., Ltd. (Futamura) saw the completion of a purpose built state-of-the-art BOPP plant located at Pulau Indah, Selangor with a total capacity of 60,000 MT per annum to tap into the growing regional demand for flexible packaging by the F&B industry driven by rapid population growth, lifestyle changes and increasing urbanisation.
At the same time, its newly constructed cast polypropylene (CPP) plant which is based in Melaka, with a capacity of 12,000 MT per annum, has further added another dimension to Scientex’s growing and diversified flexible packaging portfolio as PE and BOPP film forms the protective inner and outer layers of flexible packaging respectively whilst CPP film serves as the sealing layer in lamination based flexible packaging.
Scientex further added Klang Hock Plastic Industries to its Custom Film group when it was acquired in May 2018, bringing with it additional capacity and an established clientele list especially in the printed collation shrink packaging and agricultural film segments.
Cutting Edge Capabilities
Technology and technical knowledge are two key areas where Scientex holds an advantage in the highly competitive flexible plastic packaging industry. Our advanced machinery and equipment deploy cutting edge blown film extrusion technology from Germany to ensure the output of high quality films with good dimensional stability and consistent mechanical and optical properties. These are complemented by a full range of cutting machines capable of producing a wide selection of bags and sheets.
Scientex has the latest flexographic and rotogravure printing equipment that can print on most types of film including the thin gauge polyethylene film. These are specifically targeted at customers who place a premium on down gauging of films to protect and preserve the environment while also upholding their brand image. We have the largest flexographic printing output for plastic films in Malaysia.
Our cutting/converting machines are also able to produce a wide range of bags and sheets including 3 side-seal bags, bottom-seal bags, square-bottom bags, bag-in-rolls and wicket bags for auto packing in our capacity as the largest manufacturer of wicket bread bags in Asia.
