Who We Are

Scientex Berhad

Scientex Berhad Corporate Who We Are

For close to five decades, Scientex has played a pivotal role behind Malaysia’s progress in industrialisation and maturity as a nation. During that time, Scientex has been a model of growth and diversification in becoming a leading manufacturer on a global scale and a premier property developer on the local front.

In 1968, Scientex was a fledging enterprise engaged in the manufacture of PVC leather cloth and sheeting. Today, Scientex is an established and diversified listed company that is consistently breaking new ground in manufacturing and property development.

Scientex is one of the world’s largest producers of industrial stretch film with an export market that covers more than 60 countries representing much of the industrialised world. It is also a leading player in PP strapping bands in Asia as well as a leading producer of other industrial packaging products such as FIBC bags, form-fill & seal bags, woven bags and raffia products. Since 2013, it has also emerged as one of Malaysia’s leading producers of consumer packaging products, while remaining a mainstay in the manufacture of component parts for automotive interior. Scientex is also on the top tier of developers with integrated property projects spread over 2,660 acres of land in Peninsular Malaysia.

Corporate Philosophy

Behind our successes is our corporate philosophy of ‘management like water’. The strategies we employ may change over time, but our philosophy remains the constant behind everything we do. Our corporate philosophy is based on six separate and inter-related angles. The first is the inculcation of BELIEF among our people that what we produce for the world is as valuable, affordable, plentiful, and important as water. It is a belief anchored on the premise that our output contributes to society and the betterment of the world we live in. Next is the understanding that water only flows downwards. In other words, it is essential that we respect the laws of NATURE and SCIENCE as we seek solutions and attempt to tackle different challenges. Flowing water gathers momentum and builds up ENERGY that we harness to break barriers, leap forward and surge ahead. And like the force of water, the more obstacles we face, the greater our resolve and resilience become in our journey beyond probabilities and possibilities.

We also understand that we are an element in the vast universe just as water eventually flows into and becomes part of the deep blue sea. In recognising that there are greater forces at play in the great scheme of things, we embrace MODESTY in our quest to better ourselves. As such, even as we think big and aim high, we remain humble in our interaction with others so as to learn from them and absorb their knowledge and experience. Like the FLEXIBILITY of water, we always adopt a fluid and adaptable stance, allowing us to react and respond promptly to various challenges. It is this flexibility that places Scientex in a better position to seize opportunities in times of crisis. And finally, the PURITY and cleansing properties of water remind us that in the face of success or failure, we need to stay true to ourselves. With a clear conscience, only then can we develop and sustain positive thoughts and look beyond to better times and brighter prospects.

Corporate Identity

The SCIENTEX logo, with the SCIENTEX name imprinted within a rectangular block, represents a stamping seal of quality and reliability, strength and stability, and innovation and competitiveness. It denotes the values which have come to be associated with Scientex over the past 48 years, leading to manufacturing excellence and uncompromising quality. The colour blue represents the essential element of “water”, which is symbolic of the “management like water” corporate philosophy adopted by Scientex. These values have formed the cornerstone of our success in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

Scientex’s tagline of “healthy, friendly & happy” embodies the positive corporate culture of the Scientex family. A HEALTHY work environment that promotes ethical behaviour with transparent and clearly defined rules and procedures is an integral aspect of the Scientex corporate governance ecosystem. Scientex also encourages its people to develop HEALTHY relationships, internally and externally, that in the long run facilitate the growth of the company. Through innovation, we are in a position to constantly make our products and services user FRIENDLY with universal qualities that have wide appeal in the global marketplace. At the same time, our culture is a HAPPY one, creating an all-encompassing environment of positive energy that drives growth and promotes achievement. The tagline signs off with a “smile” in vibrant yellow that represents the warm glow of positive energy that permeates throughout the Scientex Group creating a “healthy, friendly & happy” organisation.

Scientex Berhad Corporate Who We Are

Scientex Berhad Corporate Who We Are

An insight from an insider

... with PJ Lim, Managing Director

Indeed, much has been achieved in the past 45 years... Together, I believe that we are poised for greater things in the future.

Q1

What is the significance of Scientex achieving an annual revenue of RM1 billion?

We reached this historic landmark in June 2013 after 45 years of steady and sustained growth. Concurrently, our market capitalisation has also breached the one billion ringgit mark. We are now a BILLION RINGGIT company!

Yet, far from being an end in itself, reaching these goals is merely the beginning. As a company, it is critical that we acknowledge that Scientex now belongs in a different league. Being a billion ringgit company comes with new expectations and fresh challenges. It places us on the radar of the international investment community. More importantly, we have a platform to accelerate our growth beyond what we have seen over the past few decades. It gives us an opportunity we should seize!

Q2

What are the achievements and future prospects of the Manufacturing Division?

Industrial packaging is a major engine of growth for Scientex. We have achieved rapid expansion since the start of our packaging operations to emerge as one of the top three producers of industrial stretch film in the world. Our recent acquisition of the Great Wall companies represents another major milestone as we seek to grow our earnings and create long term value for our stakeholders. This has opened up a new and exciting frontier in consumer packaging through Great Wall’s established brand positioning in the domestic and international marketplace. We are now able to derive greater economies of scale, improve our margins through costs savings and achieve synergistic efficiencies through greater operational integration of the plants. I am optimistic over the Group’s future prospects as we seek to enlarge our footprint in the rapidly growing global consumer packaging sector.

Q3

Where is Scientex today in terms of property development?

Our second engine of growth is the property development division, which has set its sights on becoming a premier property developer in the southern peninsular states of Johor and Melaka. When Scientex first ventured into property development in 1995, we were building medium cost and affordable housing to cater to the mass market. To date, we have built more than 7,000 affordable homes in our flagship development of Taman Scientex Pasir Gudang in Johor. Our success has given us the confidence to venture into niche and lifestyle products which we are now showcasing in Taman Mutiara Mas, Skudai, Taman Scientex Kulai – both in Johor - and in Taman Muzaffar Heights, Ayer Keroh, Melaka. This strategy to capitalise on niches in property development is a step in the right direction. To set us apart from the rest, we are now targeting suitable locations to build iconic landmarks in Johor which we hope will be the talking and focal point of the community in the years to come.

Q4

What is next for Scientex?

Behind the successes of our manufacturing and property development divisions is our corporate philosophy of ‘management like water’ and corporate culture as reflected by our tagline of “healthy, friendly & happy”. They provide the basis and foundation behind everything we do and will continue to do so even as we set new goals for ourselves in the medium and long term. Going forward, Scientex is adding another feature to its way of life. We will put in place a democratic workplace that over the next five years will stimulate dynamism and innovation by attracting the best young talents from around the world. This is a workplace that promotes freedom, encourages expression and rewards innovation towards drawing the line between ourselves and other companies. Now that we have achieved annual revenue of RM1 billion, our next objective is to build on our efforts and our achievements. As such, Scientex intends to double up in the next five years what we have achieved over the past 45 years!
